Conclusion: Confederate Victory |
|
Near 2:00 P.M. on April 7, the advance of the Union II Corps encountered Confederate forces entrenched on high ground near Cumberland Church. The Union forces attacked twice but were repulsed, and darkness halted the conflict. Union general Smythe was mortally wounded nearby, and Gen. J.I. Gregg was captured north of Farmville.
South of the church, Union cavalry under Gen. George Crook, having crossed the Appomattox further upstream, were also repulsed. Gen. Fitz Lee’s cavalry had their last battlefield triumph, but it was little consolation for the Confederates who after the battle had to make another night march to stay ahead of their pursuers.
