BATTLE SUMMARY
On March 13, Maj. Gen. D.H. Hill and a Confederate force arrived at Deep Gully. Deep Gully was located 8 miles from New Bern. They attacked the Union force that would last for 2 days.The artillery batteries on both sides began to take the majority of the fighting.
On March 14, the Confederate artillery assaulted the Union garrison at Fort Anderson. Brig. Gen. James J. Pettigrew, leading the Confederate attack, shelled the Union position extensively. Hoping to capture the fort, he shelled the town and the Union gunboats on the Neuse River.
The Confederates made a final assault on the Union positions. This engagement was not successful and the town and fort both remained in possession of the Federals.
