On September 11, in the early morning there was a Federal reconnaissance from the Chain Bridge to Lewinsville. A Union column commanded by Brig. Gen. William F. Smith, occupied the town of Lewinsville. Late that morning, they were reinforced with a brigade of Union soldiers. Col. J.E.B. Stuart discovered the Union occupation and formed up a Confederate force to attack the town. The Confederate force was comprised of 305 Virginia infantrymen, an artillery section, and 2 cavalry companies. Stuart made a charge against the Union flank. Although outnumbered, the Confederates forced the Federals to withdraw.
